Digital terrestrial TV services such as Freeview come to
your TV set via an aerial. Ideally this should be mounted
outside and as high as possible.
You may also get good reception if it is inside,
for example in the loft, but a set-top aerial may not
be satisfactory. To get the best reception you need to make sure that
your aerial is in good condition and is pointing towards
the best local transmitter. An outdoor aerial can
deteriorate or be knocked or blown out of its
correct position, and cables and connections from the
aerial to the TV set can become corroded.
Older aerials, cables and connections may
need replacing, especially if you live near the sea
where corrosion can happen quickly.
Reception problems, Picture break-up, clicking sounds
or no picture at all may mean that the signal reaching
your set-top box or digital TV is too weak.
If you have had this problem for a long time, you may need
to upgrade or replace your aerial.
If the problem has just started, check Today's transmitter
work to see if your local transmitter is affected
and try Resetting your set-top box or digital TV.
If possible, check another TV set connected to a different
aerial for instance, at a neighbour's to see if that
has the same problem.

BBC & ITV Freesat can provide a digital signal to those who cannot receive Freeview, with the installation of ua satellite dish and receiver box or Freesat built into a tv (IDTV). It includes over 140 digital tv & radio stations, the number of which is increasing all the time.

Testing your Aerial
You can test your current aerial through analogue Teletext. This test is designed to check if your current aerial will need to be replaced or upgraded to receive digital TV through your aerial after the switchover.
The test pattern is broadcast on Teletext page 284 on BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and S4C. You should carry out the test on all channels and under different weather conditions (fog, rain, fine dry weather, etc) to achieve a more accurate and objective result. If there are more than 4 squares missing (randomly spaced – complete lines missing are fine) then your aerial needs checked or replaced. Ideally, the screen should display a full grid of vertical/horizontal white boxes.
If you need to upgrade your current aerial we recommend the best for your area this will ensure the best possible reception.

Switchover is a two-stage process. If you have, or are planning to get Freeview, BT Vision or Top Up TV, you will need to re-tune your digital box or TV:
- At each of the two stages of switchover
- If you find you have lost any TV channels
Re-tuning regularly is good practice. This ensures that you keep your equipment up to date, and that you have all of the latest channels. If you are not sure how to re-tune, follow the guide below. It is a good idea to practice re-tuning before switchover, so you know how to re-tune on the day. Satellite and cable television does not need to be re-tuned.
These instructions are a guide only – each product works slightly differently. Your instruction manual will explain the process for your particular product. If you don't have a copy of the user manual to hand please follow the following generic guide. Make sure you do a full re-tune following the guide below. Some product menus have 'add channels' or 'auto search' functions which may not restore all channels.
Switch on your Freeview TV or box. Press 'menu' on your remote control.
Select 'first time installation' option (sometimes called 'factory reset', 'full retune' or 'default settings'. Some digital boxes will ask you for a code. If you haven't already changed it this is usually either 0000 or 1234.
-
Press 'OK' if your equipment asks if you want to delete all your channels - don’t worry, this is normal. Channels will be automatically installed. This may take a few minutes, and your equipment may shut down and restart.
Hints and tips
-
After re-tuning, you may have to reset any favourite lists and picture settings. If you re-tune a digital TV recorder, previously recorded programmes will be kept, but you should re-set future recordings (including 'series links') or you may lose them.
